Discover Berlin - From above Discover Berlin from above For starters, you could take in an overview of Berlin from above! At a height of 150 metres in one of the world’s largest helium balloons (unique to Germany), you get a spectacular view over the whole city. Or in only 20 seconds speed to the top of a 90 metre summit in Europe’s fastest lift! On the 24th and 25th stories a panorama platform awaits you with breathtaking views of Berlin. From the dome of the Reichstag you get a magnificent panorama of the city and, in addition, a look in below at the assembly room of the Parliament. And for the particularly sportive: inside the Victory Column you’ll find a spiral staircase with over 285 steps (!) leading to a 53 m high viewing platform. There’s cappuccino & more in the twice-hourly rotating, 207 metre-high Telecafé in the TV Tower (Fernsehturm). Or treat yourself to something really special and take a trip back in time in one of the original Raisin bombers at 600 metres above the city of Berlin - Start Tempelhof airport. Experience Berlin from “way up high”! Entering some of Berlin Stadtmitte’s prominent buildings we will investigate how – and above all why – a big city goes “underground”. Have you ever seen the “Mother & Child Bunker”? The bunker was built in 1940 – 41 by “Baustab Wilhelmi” one of the “Generalbauinspektors” (General Building Inspectors of the Reich Capital) for the imperial capital as part of the subway tunnels. To explore this sub terrain tunnel you will be issued with rubber boots because you will be standing in approximately 40 cm of water. You can expect to see a bunker that has been untouched since the Second World War and you will enjoy an almost unique atmosphere. Included in this underground tour you will visit the last remaining piece of the Berlin Wall. Berlin, the imperial capital, was transformed beyond recognition as the Second World War returned to the place where it had begun. Yet even without the destruction caused by the war, the Nazis would have completely altered Berlin’s historical development with their plans to remodel the city. The exhibition “Myth Germania – Shadows and Traces of the Imperial Capital” sheds new light on the historical site around the Spree river and the former ministerial gardens. On the trail of the Cold War, come and learn about the peculiar and bizarre world of the “Ghost Underground Stations”, which the West Berlin underground passed through without stopping when crossing underneath the east part of the city. The U-bahn was often required to take labyrinthine routes by virtue of the “underground borders” established by the division of Berlin. Come and investigate the functioning of a “modern” bunker. A multi-purpose underground shelter for emergency cases was built to protect approx 3,400 people for several weeks. This makes it the fourth-largest civil underground shelter in Berlin. It is still fully equipped and operational, and is even situated above a waterworks so that the provision of drink water can be assured. And discover Berlin’s “Blind Tunnel”! The earth under our feet is full of unutilized transportation constructions. » see possibilities © for all images at BerlinRallye.com in cooperation with Berliner Unterwelten e.V » Top of the page |
